Kim Penberthy of the University of Virginia says treatment for cancer can be just as challenging for a patients mental health as the diagnosis.

Kim Penberthy of the University of Virginia says treatment for cancer can be just as challenging for a patients mental health as the diagnosis.

Mental health challenges can create the cycle with the stress and things like impacting your sleep, that then weaken the immune system, Penberthy said.

She is a health psychologist at UVA and says new patients dealing with stress after a cancer diagnosis may experience physical problems as well.

Sometimes the treatment is just as challenging as the diagnosis, Penberthy said.

She said that new patients should reach out to their doctors for tools to deal with the diagnosis.

It is important if you are struggling with the stress, depression, anxiety, to address that through some treatment, because it will help everything work better, Penberthy said.

She also says patients should lean on their loved ones for support.

Thats what its all about is getting you better back on your feet, she said.

As a loved one, you cant change it or fix it for them, but you can offer your presence, Penberthy added.

Its nice to be positive, she said, but I think that can feel dismissive sometimes to people.

She says to avoid platitudes and giving unsolicited advice and to ask open-ended questions or offer support with their daily tasks instead.

Sometimes people need someone to go with them to their appointments, sometimes they need someone to stay back home and feed the animals or watch the kids, she said.

Eighteen Years of Hasht-e Subh Daily: Uninterrupted Enlightenment and Information – Hasht-e Subh – Hasht-e Subh Daily

Posted: at 2:46 am

without comments

The Hasht-e Subh Daily has been continuously active for the past eighteen years with the slogan Reflecting Yesterday, Mirroring Today, and Heralding Tomorrow. This newspaper has earned a reputable position by supporting democratic institutions, strengthening human values, and echoing the peoples voice through its news, investigative, and analytical approach. After Afghanistan fell to the Taliban, Hasht-e Subh Daily continued its operations in exile despite numerous challenges, striving to provide accurate information and amplify the voices of the people of Afghanistan. Since its inception, the newspaper has published over 120 investigative reports and thousands of analytical articles covering various aspects of social, political, economic, cultural, artistic, and sports life. Currently, Hasht-e Subh Daily operates in Persian, Pashto, Uzbek, and English, with over three and a half million followers on social media.

The Hasht-e Subh Daily was founded eighteen years ago in May 2007 by a group of prominent journalists and human rights activists. Since its establishment, it has tirelessly worked to promote democracy and the growth of political and civil movements to strengthen human rights values through its news, analytical, and investigative approach.

The newspaper began its media operations under the ownership of Sanjar Sohail and the editorship of Muhammad Qasim Akhgar, a distinguished intellectual and freedom fighter in the country.

In his first editorial for Hasht-e Subh Daily, Mr. Akhgar stated: We speak of the morning and hum the song of today and tomorrow, for even a false dawn heralds the end of night and the rise of tomorrow. Another part of this text reads: On this basis, Hasht-e Subh (8 AM) is a call to move towards the morning, an invitation for a new beginning. Hasht-e Subh is a wake-up call, for it is with awakening that one can welcome the morning, and for those who are asleep, the morning holds no meaning. Hasht-e Subh marks the start of work and the opening of doors that are closed at night.

The Hasht-e Subh Daily, recognized as Afghanistans most reputable print newspaper, has published over 120 investigative reports in various fields over the past two decades. These reports have elicited widespread reactions from the public and former government officials at the time of their release. Even after the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, the newspaper has remained steadfast in its investigative efforts, continuing to publish its investigative reports with renewed determination. In nearly the past three years, Hasht-e Subh Daily has released 24 investigative reports, primarily focusing on widespread human rights violations by the Taliban. These reports have covered issues such as the condition of prisoners, especially female inmates, the execution of civilians and former military personnel, vigilante justice, extensive administrative and financial corruption, drug trafficking, and the Talibans support of terrorist groups. These reports have provoked both domestic and international responses.

The United States Department of State referenced one of Hasht-e Subh Dailys investigative reports on the status of female prisoners in three northern provinces of Afghanistan in its annual human rights report this year, which sparked a wide range of reactions both within and outside Afghanistan.

Additionally, Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Afghanistan, and officials from several other organizations have engaged closely with Hasht-e Subh Daily regarding its investigative reports, sharing the findings with international bodies. Some of Hasht-e Subh Dailys investigative reports have also been examined by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

Currently, in addition to publishing in Persian, Pashto, Uzbek, and English, Hasht-e Subh Daily produces two podcasts named Womens Word and Civil Dialogues. The Womens Word podcast focuses on issues and narratives related to women, while Civil Dialogues broadcasts recordings of the newspapers weekly Twitter Spaces discussions. Furthermore, Hasht-e Subh Daily publishes a weekly magazine that is distributed in Canada.

The Hasht-e Subh Daily has established a research unit, and its readers will soon witness the publication of research articles in various fields. Additionally, since last year, the newspapers visual media production department has been active.

Over the years, the Hasht-e Subh Daily and its journalists have received numerous prestigious national and international awards. In 2012, Reporters Without Borders awarded the global Press Freedom prize to Hasht-e Subh Daily.

The East-West Center (EWC) awarded the Journalist of Courage and Impact to Parwiz Kawa, the Executive Director of Hasht-e Subh Daily, in 2018 and 2022. Moreover, in 2023, Hasht-e Subh Daily, along with Amu TV and Etilaatroz, received the Democracy Award from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). In the same year, the newspaper jointly won the Emmy Award with The New York Times.

Additionally, the newspapers journalists, especially Akbar Rustami, received the Journalist of the Year award continuously from 2012 to 2016, given annually by the Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) for impactful investigative reports.

Asyia Hamzaie, a journalist for Hasht-e Subh Daily, won the Journalist of the Year award in 2020. Hasib Bahesh, the former editor-in-chief, received the award in 2022, and Amin Kawa, the senior editor and chief reporter, was honored with the Journalist of the Year award in 2023.

Throughout this period, Hasht-e Subh Daily has unwaveringly continued its mission to promote human rights values, strengthen freedom of expression, and support the free flow of information. Currently, it serves as a crucial news source for Afghanistan, providing daily reports and analyses on the current situation in Afghanistan, the region, and the world. A dedicated and mission-driven team of journalists in exile tirelessly operates under the banner of Reflecting Yesterday, Mirroring Today, and Heralding Tomorrow.

Ferdows Kawish, a former editor-in-chief of the Hasht-e Subh Daily and a prominent journalist in the country, comments on the past and present achievements of the newspaper: Hasht-e Subh Daily has consistently focused on supporting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. It has worked tirelessly to promote democratic accountability, control over power, and the establishment of individual rights and governance. This dedication has always been a hallmark of Hasht-e Subh Daily.

Due to its steadfast commitment to promoting democracy, the rule of law, and democratic processes, and exposing the extensive human rights violations by the Taliban, the newspaper has faced severe pressure and threats from the group.

In October 2022, the Taliban shut down the Hasht-e Subh Dailys website, 8am.af, and in January 2023, they issued arrest warrants for its executives and staff. Nevertheless, Hasht-e Subh Daily, committed to independent journalism, has continued its unbiased reporting under a new domain (8am.media).

The newspapers audience also praises its efforts to uphold human rights values, strengthen freedom of expression, and promote investigative journalism. They believe that one of Hasht-e Subh Dailys most significant strengths is its relentless reflection of realities and support for democratic processes.

One of the protesting women, currently living under Taliban rule and a regular reader of the Hasht-e Subh Daily, shares her view: During the Talibans control, Hasht-e Subh Daily has been the resounding voice for women, girls, and all citizens who have been marginalized by the Taliban. It is a source of accurate information and a beacon of hope for women and girls. We sincerely appreciate this media outlet for publishing the perspectives of women and all citizens.

Ahmad Ferdows, a student in Kabul, says, The state of information dissemination here [in Kabul] is not good. I eagerly read the investigative and analytical articles of the Hasht-e Subh Daily and aspire to write articles that could be published by this media outlet. It would be a source of pride for me. We value the work of Hasht-e Subh Daily during this time, as it continues to enlighten and inform.

Currently, Hasht-e Subh Daily, with 3.6 million followers on social media, is one of the most widely followed media outlets in Afghanistan. After the country fell to the Taliban, the newspapers print edition was halted, and its activities have continued online, through a weekly magazine and podcasts.

Before the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, Hasht-e Subh Daily was printed and distributed simultaneously in more than ten cities across the country. During the previous government, it was printed in the provinces of Kabul, Herat, Balkh, and Kunduz and then distributed in the provinces of Badakhshan, Takhar, Baghlan, Ghazni, and Bamyan.

Hasht-e Subh Daily has consistently emphasized its commitment to independent and professional journalism, aiming to provide unbiased coverage of events and reflect the opinions of the people. It asserts that no repressive actions by the Taliban or other extremist groups can silence this media outlet, which strives for freedom of expression and the free flow of information.

Vivek Ramaswamy welcomes racist comments on his podcast AsAmNews – AsAmNews

Posted: May 15, 2024 at 2:46 am

without comments

In a shocking clip that aired on former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamys podcast , the right-wing commentator Ann Coulter unabashedly admitted that she would not have voted for Ramaswamy because hes Indian.

Ramaswamy, who was born in the United States to parents who emigrated from India, hosts the podcast Truth. The episode, which was entitled the N word: Nationalism, included many shocking moments of blatant racism.

According to the Daily Beast, after Ramaswamy warmly welcomed Coulter to his show, the conservative media pundit thanked him for having her on by saying: I too am a fan of yours, though Im going to make a point of disagreeing with you so that it will be fun. You are so bright and articulateand I guess I can call you articulate since youre not an American Black, cant say that about them, thats derogatory.

The two launched into a conversation about American identity and citizenship, the New York Post reported that Coulter claimed to Ramaswamy that the national identity is the WASP- White Anglo-Saxon Protestants.

I agreed with many many things you said during in fact, probably more than most other candidates when you were running for president, but I still would not have voted for you, because youre an Indian, she said.

However, in Ramaswamys efforts to promote the podcast on X, not only did he refrain from criticizing Coulter, he expressed his respect for her.

@AnnCoulter told me flat-out to my face that she couldnt vote for me because youre an Indian, even though she agreed with me more than most other candidates. I disagree with her but respect she had the guts to speak her mind, he wrote on X.

Huffpost reported that Ramaswamys post to social media invited backlash from other politicians. Ted Lieu, the representative of Californias 36th congressional district who emigrated from Taiwan, wrote that while he is not surprised by Ann Coulters remarks, he is disappointed in Ramaswamy.

I wasnt surprised that Ann Coulter made a racist statement about Vivek, Lieu posted on X. What surprised me is the weakness and lack of self-respect of @VivekGRamaswamy. Hes actually promoting this episode and praising the person who spewed raw racism to his face. I feel sorry for Vivek.

For Todays Quote, we have picked Chapter 16, Verse 8. This verse talks about purpose of creation of the world, and it says, asatyam apratihha te jagad hur anhvaram aparaspara-sambhta kim anyat kma-haitukam

They say, The world is without Absolute Truth, without any basis (for moral order), and without a God (who has created or is controlling it). It is created from the combination of the two has no purpose other than sexual gratification.

There are two ways of refraining from immoral behavior. The first is to refrain from unrighteousness through the exercise of willpower. The second way is to abstain from sin due to fear of God. People who can abstain from sinning merely by willpower are very few. Most people desist from doing wrong due to the fear of punishment.

The only impossible journey is the one you never begin. Tony Robbins

For Todays Quote, we have picked Chapter 16, Verse 7. This verse talks about problem with people having demoniac qualities, and it says, pravitti cha nivitti cha jan na vidur sur na haucha npi chchro na satya tehu vidyate

Those possessing a demoniac nature do not comprehend which actions are proper and which are improper. Hence, they possess neither purity, nor good conduct, nor even truthfulness.

Dharma consists of codes of conduct that are conducive to ones purification and the general welfare of all living beings. Adharma consists of prohibited actions that lead to degradation and cause harm to society. The demoniac nature is devoid of faith in the knowledge and wisdom of the scriptures. Hence, those under its sway are confused about what is right and wrong action.

It is never too late to be what you might have been. George Eliot

Morning Messages from Bhagavad Gita about Qualities that bring Bondage or Freedom – Times Now

For Todays Quote, we have picked Chapter 16, Verse 5. This verse talks about qualities that bring bondage or freedom, and it says, daiv sampad vimokhya nibandhysur mat m hucha sampada daivm abhijto si pava

The divine qualities lead to liberation, while the demoniac qualities are the cause for a continuing destiny of bondage. Grieve not, O Arjun, as you were born with saintly virtues.

Shree Krishna now explains the consequences of both. He says that the demoniac qualities keep one fettered to the samsara of life and death, while the cultivation of saintly virtues helps one break through the bondage of Maya. To tread the spiritual path successfully and pursue it till the end, a sdhak (aspirant) needs to watch out for many things. If even one of the demoniac qualities, such as arrogance, hypocrisy, etc. remains in the personality, it can become the cause of failure.

For Todays Quote, we have picked Chapter 16, Verse 6. This verse talks about what makes for demoniac qualities, and it says, dvau bhta-sargau loke smin daiva sura eva cha daivo vistaraha prokta sura prtha me hiu

There are two kinds of beings in this worldthose endowed with a divine nature and those possessing a demoniac nature. I have described the divine qualities in detail, O Arjun. Now hear from me about the demoniac nature.

Krishna says, All souls carry their natures with them from past lives. Those who cultivated virtuous qualities and performed meritorious deeds in the past lives are the ones who are born with divine natures, while those who indulged in sin and defiled their minds in previous lives carry the same tendencies into the present one. The divine and demoniac natures are the two extremes of this spectrum, with the demoniac traits dominating in the lower abodes.

Believe in your infinite potential. Your only limitations are those you set upon yourself. Roy T. Bennett

Walking Meditation followed by Coffee and Conversation – Little Village – Little Village Magazine

Posted: at 2:38 am

without comments

Join us at 10 a.m. the first Saturday of every month for Walking Meditation in the woods of Hickory Hill Park (Conklin Lane entrance off of North Dodge Street), followed by coffee/tea and conversation at Press Coffee.

What is Walking Meditation? In our daily lives, we usually walk to get somewhere (sometimes in a hurry), to exercise, or for some other purpose. When we practice Walking Meditation, we have no purpose or direction in space or time. We dont fill the silence with talk, or our heads with worries about the past or the future. The purpose of Walking Meditation is Walking Meditation: being fully present in our bodies and in the moment. Because we walk in freedom from the demands the world and we ourselves put on our shoulders, we smile while we walk. As Thch Nht Hnh says, When you walk, arrive with every step. That is walking meditation. Theres nothing else to it.

About Winding Path Sangha The Winding Path Sangha is a community of lay practitioners following the Plum Village tradition of Vietnamese Buddhist teacher and peacemaker Thch Nht Hnh, who says there is no path to peace; peace is the path.

Because we know that path can be winding and sometimes challenging, and to support peace within ourselves and in the world, our Sangha gathers weekly to meditate, hear from teachings by Thch Nht Hnh, share about our mindfulness practice, and discern together how to live fully in the present moment at home, at work, and in our community. We also meet regularly for mens and womens groups, and occasionally for book discussions and special events.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of beliefs or experience with meditation, Buddhism, or mindfulness practices.

What Can You Learn From the 2024 Candidates Winner – Chess.com

Posted: at 2:36 am

without comments

I have 2 great news today.

First, my next course is at its final stages. It will be about chess strategy and it will be the perfect complement of my last course "The Complete Chess Tactics Bootcamp". The course will be ready on April 30th, so mark that date to get the best offers!

The second important thing is that yesterday the 2024 Candidates Tournament finished and we have a challenger!

17-year-old Dommaraju Gukesh convincingly won the tournament with 9/14 points, and he will play against world champion Ding Liren to have a chance to become the youngest world chess champion ever!

As I had previously anticipated, Gukesh had been playing the best chess in the tournament.

Despite being a teenager, Gukesh is very passionate about chess and has been studying hard for many years. For todays lesson, I studied all of his games from the Candidates and tried to find out what made him the better player.

I noticed some very outstanding qualities that I wanted to share with you so that you can try to incorporate them in your games.

1) Dont Panick Even when he was under extreme pressure, Gukesh kept his cool. In the second game he had the following position as Black against Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa (aka Pragg) after 15 moves:

Until this point Pragg was quickly playing his moves as he was under preparation whereas Gukesh was thinking on his own.

Black is a pawn up and could get a third pawn after 15fxe6. However, considering that White had prepared this line and also easily attack the e6-pawn in that line (White could play Bf4, Bh4 or even Nd4), Gukesh was still able to come up with a new original plan by going 15f5!? planning to go Nf6 and slowly consolidate his position. This allowed him to win his first game in the tournament.

2) Be Pragmatic Gukesh can easily find solutions to worse positions.

This is the position that he had as Black after 17 moves in his 4th game against Fabiano Caruana.

Black is under some pressure since the knight on f5 is quite strong. White might even have ideas to sacrifice with Bxh6 mounting an attack against Blacks king.

Gukesh played 17Ne7!? Planning to trade knights. After 18.Nxe5 Nxf5 19.exf5 c5!?

his idea is to trade as many pawns as possible and the extra (doubled) pawn on f5 wont be much of a difference. Gukesh drew the game comfortably.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Suggested: Get my Free Course "Your Daily Improvement Plan"

---------------------------------------------------------------------

3) Dont Be Dogmatic In his next encounter with Caruana (this time as White), he had the following position after 26 moves:

Here Gukesh played the surprising 27.fxg5 creating 2 sets of isolated doubled pawns after 27Qxg5:

Most players would not dare to play this way as White pawns can now become targets but Gukesh ideas was to play 28.Rf3! planning to double rooks on the f-file and attack the pawn on f5. The game ended in a draw after an accurate defense by Caruana.

4) Innovate Many people have been claiming that classical chess is dead since opening preparation is now killing creativity.

However, Gukesh is ready to come up with new ideas as early as move 4!

In this position that we get after 4 moves in the Nimzo-Indian Defense, Gukesh (playing as Black against Nijat Abasov) played the move 4h6. This position has been reached in thousands of games and moves like 40-0, 4d5 or 4c5 are very common. However, the move 4h6 is pretty much unique and the idea of Nh7-f8 that Gukesh later played is new.

5) Know When to Press Gukesh is a very objective player but as soon as he can start getting ambitious, he will not hesitate.

In his game against Alireza Firouzja from the 13th round he had this position as White after 34 moves:

Here taking on f5 with 35.Nxf5 might look tempting but after 35Nh5! Black is attacking both f4 and f5. Gukesh played a few solid moves with 35.Kh2 Nh5 36.Qf2 but after 36Rg6 37.Rd5!

White is already pressing for an advantage, putting pressure on f5 and planning to double rooks on the d-file and invade with Rd7. Firouzja was not able to hold the position, giving Guskesh a very important win.

If you want to see a more detailed analysis of the positions that I show in this article, check my video analysis here: https://youtu.be/aTJxn916qxk
