The Democratic National Committee says its investing $15 million in 7 swing state parties – The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Democrats are trying to offer political counterprograming to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, announcing $15 million to fund campaign operations in seven key swing states even as some in the party have urged President Joe Biden to bow out of Novembers election.
The Democratic National Committee announced Tuesday that it is investing $15 million in state parties, meant to help them open more field offices and bolster staffing. The funding will let them add to the 217 existing coordinated campaign offices working jointly for Bidens reelection bid and state parties that already employ 1,100-plus staffers in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the DNC said.
The investments will pump nearly $3 million into Wisconsin; nearly $2 million each into Pennsylvania, Michigan and Nevada; almost $1.5 million in Arizona; more than $1.2 million in North Carolina; and more than $1 million in Georgia.
The outlay was planned prior to former President Donald Trump being injured in an attempted assassination during his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, which prompted Biden and his campaign to temporarily shift its reelection strategy. Trump nonetheless is attending his partys convention and will accept his partys nomination on Thursday.
Trumps campaign has spent recent weeks opening field offices, including those targeting key constituencies, in conjunction with the Republican National Committee.
We have paid staffers and volunteer-powered field programs in every battleground state, and they are expanding daily, Trump campaign spokesman Karoline Leavitt said. Our aggressive and experienced operation is focused on turning out votes and highlighting the contrast between Trump and Biden.
The DNC for months has argued that its and the Biden campaigns growing on-the-ground operation could help swing an election expected to be close. Still, top Democrats are trying to move past questions from within their own party that have persisted about whether Biden is up to continuing to seek reelection in the weeks since his debate debacle and despite the races shifting dynamics after Trump was injured last weekend.
Biden and his team have furiously attempted to reassure jittery lawmakers and donors, as well as skeptical voters, that, at age 81, the Democratic president can still win in November and handle a second four-year term. Nearly 20 Democratic lawmakers have nonetheless publicly called on Biden to step aside.
What to know about the 2024 Election
The DNC said the investments will fund new field offices and help state parties get more accurate data and better coordinate party efforts for down-ballot races.
Democrats are leaving nothing to chance and investing heavily on the ground to ensure Joe Biden and Kamala Harris win this election, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison said in a statement. This election was always going to be close, and regardless of beltway media narratives, the entire election is going to come down to operation and turnout in the battleground states.
Arizona Democratic Party chair Yolanda Bejarano said state officials and the Biden campaign opened a 15th coordinated campaign office in Arizona over the weekend, adding that, This election is going to be won at the doors, talking to people about the issues that they care about.
This is perfect timing from my vantage point, Bejarano said of the DNC investment. We need the resources to do the work, to hire organizers, to have town halls across the state, to get the message out through media buys.

Music, chess and the harmonies of the world – TheArticle

Chess and music are frequently connected, indeed rightly so. Of celebrated composers, Sergei Prokofiev was a talented player of master strength. Aggressive and tactical in style, the composer of the heroic score for Alexander Nevsky and the romantic ballet, Romeo and Juliet, once defeated Capablanca in a simultaneous display. His surviving games gave ample evidence of his creative abilities over the chessboard.
Jose Raul Capablanca vs. Sergei Prokofiev (simultaneous display)
Sergei Prokofiev vs. Maurice Ravel
Maurice Delage vs. Sergei Prokofiev
In contrast, the avant-garde composer John Cage, learnt chess, primarily in order to communicate osmotically with his artistic hero, Marcel Duchamp. If there was a chessboard parallel to Cage, it was former world champion (1963-1969) Tigran Petrosian at his most mysterious, as British Master Peter Clarke described Petrosianic strategy in his anthology of the Maestros most outstanding games.
Tigran Petrosian vs. Wlodzimierz Schmidt
On playing over the above game for the first time, the following question occurred to me: to what extent is the development of new strategic ideas still possible in modern chess?
Let me attempt to elaborate on this point. A century and a half ago, the profound chess thinker Steinitz systematically collected (for the first time) a wealth of information concerning the positional and strategic elements that go up to make the game of chess. Never before had there existed information (embedded in Steinitzs own games and annotations) concerning the desirability of establishing pawn centres; of seizing the bishop pair; of avoiding pawn weaknesses in ones own camp while inflicting such evils on the adversarys position; of creating a pawn majority on the Q-side, and much more.
The Steinitzian theories were formulated into rules by the Praeceptor Germaniae, Siegbert Tarrasch, and this massive achievement on the part of the German Grandmaster represented the close of the first major stage in the development of chess strategic thought.
Since the time of Tarrasch there have been two more significant movements, bringing with them an advance in our grasp of the strategic possibilities and limitationsofthe chessboard. I mean the Hypermodern revolution and the rise of the dynamic Soviet school of chess.
All three movements, the Classical, the Hypermodern and the Soviet, added something new to our thinking about chess, but, to a very large extent, the two latter movements also embodied a denial of their intellectual ancestor, the Classical school. For example: the theory of the Hypermodern masters (Reti, Grnfeld . . .) concerning the establishment of pawn centres was not so much an entirely new concept (as was the original theory concerning pawn centres) but a reversal, in certain situations, of the Classical rules.
The historical stage reached by modern chess is: the Eclectic.
The best of modern chess has evolved into an amalgam of all previous theories: the classical approach of Boris Spassky; the Romanticism of Tal; nowadays we see top Grandmasters gaily setting up massive pawn centres in true classical style in some of their games , while demolishing identical centres (all according to Reti) in others. Today any strategic idea will gain acceptance if it works, and it is rare that a strategic conception will be condemned on purely abstract grounds without the support of at least some analysis. Everything goes, if it is successful. The following quotation from Peter Clarkes collection of Tals games typifies the modern approach:
A very good rule says that one should avoid weakening ones King position by advancing pawns. However, rules are meant to guide, not to enslave. One of the blessings of present-day chess is thatit is freer than ever from dogma. Many of the most valuable ideas would never have been investigated , had not masters persevered with bad moves. Clarke is referringto Blacks11th move inthevariation:
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f3 O-O 6. Be3 e5 7. Nge2 c6 8. d5 cxd5 9. cxd5 a6 10. Qd2 Nbd7 11. g4 h5
11 h5 is in fact so strong that the whole variation has now been virtually abandoned from Whites side.
So, in view of all this, can we assert that it is still possible for progress to occur in the history of chess ideas, even when we have formulated all the rules and also discovered when it is possible to violate our own formulations? In the present game versus Schmidt, Petrosian provides a possible answer to this creative dilemma. In the previous examples I quoted the Classical rules were reversed for very good and valid reasons (a further example is the good, yet backward, black Q-pawn in certain variations of the Sicilian Defence). If one accepts that chess contains an element of art in its complex make-up then one can perhaps gain some insight into Petrosians mystical conduct of this game.
Against Schmidt, Petrosian certainly reverses all Classical principles, but are the reasons ones which we can recognize as good and healthy?
It is possible to argue that the era of truly creative Western art has now passed and that all which remains for art to achieve is to parody former greatness. Does modern art have truly original statements to make, or is it painfully aware of the achievements of the past, even in its very own act of creation? I would be the last to deny that the work of Mahler contains elements of profound and moving beauty, but structurally this work is dominated by symphonies. If one compares Mahlers 7th or 9th Symphony with any symphony by Mozart, Beethoven or Brahms, one will begin to appreciate the factor of parody concealed in the artistic consciousness of the twentieth century. Examples nearer our own time are Philip Glass, Andy Warhol, and Dmitri Shostakovich, who often creates the effect in his work of laughing at himself (e.g. the pure circus music of Shostakovichs 9th Symphony.) Paradoxically, Shostakovitch had been commissioned by Stalin , no less, after the composers triumph with his Leningrad Symphony, to compose a work celebrating the Soviet victory against Hitler. Even more extreme approaching artistic nihilism are Stockhausen and Cage, in particular the lattersFour Minutes 33 seconds,in which the virtuoso pianist does absolutely nothing during the stipulated time period.
In Petrosians games this artistic crisis is sometimes translated into chess terms. If it is no longer possible to invent ideas that are truly original then it is still possible, as an act of creative defiance, to parody all the Classical rules. In this game Petrosian simply reverses all of good old Dr Tarraschs formulations, as a sheer act of technical virtuosity. This mysterious encounter shows Petrosian mocking all the principles by which other players live, and in a sense this is chess without soul just as so much of modern art lacks true soul. Further we might say that Petrosians play here corresponds to that twentieth-century music which lacks all tonal centre. I suspect that the initial impulses going to create atonal music represented just as much a negative or reversal of traditional tonality as the consciousness of being involved in the genuine process of artistic achievements. As we have seen, Cage goes even further!
I knew Cage and played against him many times, even organising a birthday celebration for him at the Chelsea Arts Club and conspiring with then Vice President, Barry Martin, to present a birthday cake in the shape of DuchampsFontaine, in other words an inverted, white ceramic urinal. On his sad passing, I was invited in December 1993 to deliver his funerary oration at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
When the German composer Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) wrote his symphonyDie Harmonie der Welt(later to metamorphose into an opera of the same name) I doubt that he had chess in mind. However, there is, I believe a connection.
HindemithsHarmony of the Worldfocuses on the life of astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) a student of the eccentric Tycho Brahe. Brahe was himself a groundbreaking observer of the universe. He inhabited a castle called the Fortress of the Stars (Uraniborg) and wore a false bronze nose for everyday use, saving his gold and silver prosthetic noses for best. Tychos original nose had been slashed in a duel, not blasted by celestial lightning from the heavens, which so obsessed him.
Kepler led a less dramatic existence, concentrating, without much incident, on establishing the harmonic relationship between earth, the remaining planets and the sun. And this is where chess comes into the equation.
World chess champion Vassily Smyslov once published an anthology of his chessboard masterpieces entitledIn Search of Harmony
a volume, by the way, in which I figure as one of the great mans victims. Chess is an area of human endeavour, which, in common with mathematics and music, allows child prodigies to demonstrate astounding genius. And I suggest that Harmony is the key.
Consider the young Mozart. Among so many other precocious musical achievements, such as composinga Minuet and Trio in G Majoraged five, he was able to reconstruct and transcribe AllegrisMisererefrom memory, having heard the closely guarded score just onceduring a visit to The Vatican. It should be recalled that at the age of fourteen, Mozart also wrote his first opera:Mitridate Re di Ponto, or Mithridates, King of Pontus.
In mathematics alarming precocity was displayed by, for example, Ruth Lawrence, who graduated from Oxford University age thirteen with a starred first class Honours Degree; not to mention John Nunn, who went up to Oxford at the age of fifteen to pursue his mathematical studies. Nunn, who also distinguished himself as a chess-playing prodigy, went on to become a grandmaster and professional player, who numbered even the legendary Anatoly Karpov amongst his scalps.
Indeed, accounts abound of amazingly youthful chess prodigies, including Jos Capablanca who allegedly picked up the moves of the game aged four, simply by watching his father play. Then there was Paul Morphy who at twelve defeated the illustrious European Master Lowenthal, and perhaps most spectacular of all, Bobby Fischer, US champion at the age of fourteen and victor of the so-calledGame of the Centurywhen he was thirteen.
It seems to me that there must be some quality which links chess, music and mathematics. I believe that quality to be an inner harmony which connects all three activities and which the youthful human brain is capable of identifying. The striking factor is that prodigies in chess, music and mathematics are capable of performing at the highest level without significantprior experience.
It would be unthinkable for a child or young teenager to paint like Leonardo da Vinci or write with the depth of Tolstoy or Shakespeare, since the relative life experience would not yet have been accumulated in general such dimensions would be missing. For music, maths and chess, on the other hand, the prodigies appear to be able to leap the chasm of experience and tap directly into an underlying harmony, a harmony which most of us cannot easily perceive.
Apart from John Nunn, who was proficient in both maths and chess from an early age, it is worth noting that Smyslov (World Chess Champion from 1957-1958) was also an accomplished opera singer. Meanwhile, Soviet Chess Grandmaster Mark Taimanov enjoyed a second career as a concert pianist.
With the advent of computers, such as the Demis Hassabis AlphaZero, new dimensions of harmony are now constantly being revealed. At first sight,or to the uninitiated, the moves and strategies of AlphaZero may appear opaque. Queens moved to fantastically improbable attacking squares such ash1, at the rearwards furthest extremity of the board, or sacrifices made for no apparent immediate compensation. Yet the former World Champion Magnus Carlsen has carried out a deep study of the programmes games and drawn advantageous conclusions for his own strategies. Harmony is there and Magnus has located it.

Natural disaster preparedness and aftermath: How to help kids cope with their emotions – Vox.com
Posted: at 2:34 am
Its a disconcerting but unmistakable fact that in an age of climate change-related natural disasters, parents may now find themselves fielding more questions from their children about wildfires, tornadoes, extreme heat, and hurricanes and facing the prospect of guiding their kids through an emergency.
Given all the stressors families face on a daily basis, discussing and planning for such extreme events often falls by the wayside. We know by the data that many Americans live in the moment, and theres so much on familys plates that it's hard to remember to think about something in the future, says Melissa Brymer, the director of terrorism and disaster programs for the UCLA-Duke University National Center for Child Traumatic Stress.
Thinking about the possibility of a natural disaster impacting your family can be overwhelming, so it makes sense that you would want to avoid it. But having a plan in place that keeps your kids needs in mind in case an extreme weather event does occur is crucial. Even if you dont live in a part of the country prone to these events, climate-related disasters are striking everywhere and with greater frequency. Preparedness logistically, physically, and emotionally is more important than ever.
Broaching the topic doesnt need to be distressing, experts say. Rather, its possible to talk honestly about the potential of a climate event while still allaying kids anxieties and giving them space to discuss their emotions. Despite how stressful it can seem, there are also strategies to help your kids cope if your family is affected by a natural disaster.
Parents understandably want to protect their children from unpleasant emotions, but try not to minimize the likelihood of a natural disaster, says Caroline Hickman, a climate-aware psychotherapist who focuses on eco-anxiety in children and young people. You dont want to frighten your child, but you do want them to be prepared in case there is an emergency.
Consider the chance of certain extreme weather events where you live and give them age-appropriate guidance on how your family would stay safe, says American Academy of Pediatrics spokesperson David Schonfeld, the director of the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement. Younger kids respond well to storytelling, Hickman says, while older kids might roll their eyes and resist. But you have to be very firm with them and say, Look, I get it. Im annoying. You dont want to talk about it right now, but we are going to talk about it sometime this week, she says.
You might say to a younger child, Were entering into a season where we could get storms that bring a lot of rain and wind. But we will listen to the weather forecast and go to a place where the rain and wind arent as strong if we need to so we can stay safe. You could also take this opportunity to explain the concept of a go bag a backpack with essentials in the event you need to evacuate and ask them what they might pack in it, like a favorite toy. The US Department of Homeland Security offers free extreme weather preparedness resources for children and families.
I dont think the goal is just to let them know bad things can happen because thats just frightening. It isnt helpful, Schonfeld says. It is helpful if you can give them practical information about what they can do to decrease the risks and keep themselves and those they care about safe.
It can be helpful to ask kids, especially those in grade school, what they know about extreme weather events that occur where you live and how they feel about it, Hickman says. Chances are, they know as much as you do, if not more, she says, and children love teaching their parents things. This can give you an opportunity to correct them on any misinformation they may have read online or heard from friends.
Feelings come later when youre safe.
Let them know if they ever feel scared, anxious, or have any questions about natural disasters, youre here for them, says clinical psychologist Regine Galanti, author of Parenting Anxious Kids: Understanding Anxiety in Children by Age and Stage. Youll want to validate your childrens emotions without bringing in your own. Avoid statements like Im freaking out about this too, or You dont have to be scared. Instead try, Its gotten too hot in our house so we have to go somewhere else to cool off. I know its last minute and Im not happy about it either. Well talk about it more in the car.
Thats actually super invalidating when you tell a kid not to feel their feelings, Galanti says.
Reassure your children that they dont need to take on the responsibility of keeping the family safe. Remind them that they can relax knowing that you will tell them when its time to take action, says Chandra Ghosh Ippen, the associate director of the Child Trauma Research Program at the University of California, San Francisco and author of the Trinka and Sam book series developed to help families with young children cope after natural disasters.
If a natural disaster is imminent, explain to your kids any precautions you are currently taking, Schonfeld says. You might say, Theres a bad storm coming and were going to go to the basement for a little while because its safer there, or, Were tracking this fire. It might hit our area but because we have a plan, well be safe since we are going to stay at grandmas if it does.
Youll want to model effective emotional coping even if youre feeling anxious, says Schonfeld. That means sharing that you do have some unpleasant feelings and outlining what youre doing to cope with them. You could mention, for instance, how the flooding made you nervous, but you remembered all of the steps your family has taken to stay safe and how you feel more prepared.
Avoid watching constant news or media coverage on TV or online, both for your own mental health and for your childs peace of mind. Choose quality sources of news and only read or watch as much as you need to be informed about what steps to take next. Kids are observant and will pick up on their parents anxieties, even if they dont understand exactly why they are upset, Ghosh Ippen says. If you need to take a moment to break down, do so in private. Because for us to provide that support for our children, Ghosh Ippen says, we need to have a place where we can metabolize.
In the event of an evacuation, tell your kids you are going to a place where you are absolutely certain you will be safe, Ghosh Ippen says. It can be helpful to give children a task, says Hickman, such as grabbing their go bag and a book or putting their shoes on. You might also mention that your familys role is to get out of the way so emergency responders can do their jobs. Dont feel like you must unpack any of your kids emotions during the height of an emergency, Hickman says: Feelings come later when youre safe.
Should you shelter in place, explain why youre doing so, Brymer says. You could say, The weather is dangerous so you cant play outside and we need to sit in the basement until the storm passes, or, Its too hot to go to the park today so were going to do some arts and crafts inside where its cool. Distracting your kids from the ongoing extreme weather event can help pass the time, especially if youve lost power, Schonfeld says. Try singing songs, playing games, building a pillow fort, or reading books.
In the aftermath of a natural disaster, its important parents dont pretend it didnt happen, experts say. You can praise your children for being mature and playing their part, Hickman says. Be truthful with your children if you are unable to return home right away and if there are disruptions to school. You could say, We need to stay here longer than we thought because our house was damaged in the storm, but youre safe here. Were going to continue to stay together as a family.
Parents should try to facilitate conversations with their kids to discuss how they feel about the disaster. Kids can mask how theyre feeling, Hickman says. You need to repeatedly ask those questions, because if you just do it once, and think were done big mistake, Hickman says. You need to come back to it. On the surface, children may appear calm, but are struggling to cope with the event. Acknowledge that it might have been scary and ask them how theyre feeling now. Chances are that if your family was directly impacted by the extreme weather event, your kids might know another family that has been, too. We get a secondary trauma or a vicarious trauma, Hickman says, which makes having repeated conversations necessary.
You need to repeatedly ask those questions, because if you just do it once, and think were done big mistake.
Children are more likely to be upset over the loss of their routines, Hickman says, and parents should acknowledge their childs emotions. You can lead the conversation by mentioning, I feel sad were dealing with all of this. Im wondering how you feel about it?
You show them how to deal with the emotion, Hickman says. Youre not collapsed on the floor in a mess.
Acknowledge any damage to property, too. Resist the urge to tell your kids that you can buy more toys, Schonfeld says, and instead affirm that you know how important they were to them. Try to reframe a childs sadness over losing their backyard tree house, for instance, as a sign of how much love they had for it.
If school is canceled, you can facilitate ways for kids to connect with their friends, Brymer says, whether through coordinating a playdate, FaceTiming with the other childs parents, or making artwork your kid can give to their friends when they see each other again.
Common reactions children might have after a natural disaster include sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, and developmental regression, like bedwetting or thumb-sucking. Give your child grace to self-soothe in the service of healing, Schonfeld says, but encourage them to move forward. Your goal is to get them back to normal as quickly as you can, Galanti says. So what extra supports do I need to give my kid to get them back to their normal? You should seek out a mental health professional if your child is harming themselves or others or if behavioral problems persist.
Continue to acknowledge how you feel in the aftermath so your kids know its okay to discuss their emotions, Brymer says. However, your child could feel confident and secure that youve kept them safe and may not be affected by the natural disaster, Ghosh Ippen says.
Regardless of the extreme weather event or the extent of disruption to your family, experts stress the importance of acknowledgment: that the event occurred, that your child might be scared, that they might have lost a routine. Keep the lines of communication open and let kids know that theyre allowed to feel any range of emotions.

Dr. Denise Watts reflects on personal growth in first year as SCCPSS Superintendent – Connect Savannah.com
Posted: at 2:34 am
After one year on the job, Savannah-Chatham County Public School System Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts took time on Wednesday, June 26 to reflect on lessons learned, personal growth, and more. Her comments came during a press conference held at Woodville-Tompkins and organized by SCCPSS communications.
It's been an exciting year. I continue to be honored and extremely privileged to serve as the 25th Superintendent of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, said Watts in her opening statement. Almost a year ago, I stood in a boardroom before the ink was dry on my contract. I said that I was uniquely prepared and ready to serve as a catalyst for change. And today, I'm even more convinced of this.
I'm very thankful to the Board of Education for providing the support and guidance to do my job. I'm confident that we will continue this work to reach our joint aspirations and inevitable success in the district. I've also had the opportunity to work with a world class staff. I have met and observed employees across every employee group. The blood, sweat, and tears are real. Their dedication is unmatched.
Being able to have the Davis-Edwards-Harris Educational Complex open under my leadership is something that I'm very proud of, Watts said.
She also addressed transportation of students as a priority, as well as literacy and teacher retention. The school district, under Watts, has already approved raises for district staff members to include teachers. SCCPSS partnered with Chatham Area Transit (CAT) this year for a trial program where students ride for free. It was an effort to increase attendance numbers in Savannahs public schools and it could continue next school year.
[TRAVIS JAUDON]
Dr. Denise Watts speaks to media at Woodville-Tompkins on June 26, 2024
Teacher burnout was one of the things that I heard loud and clear when I got here. Teacher burnout is real, she said. It's real not only here, but it is real all across the nation. To be able to have some immediate solutions to resolving teacher burnout that included the voices of our teachers has been very productive work.
[SCCPSS]
Dr. Denise Watts
Sometimes the opportunities to hear from teachers can come in the most unexpected of places.
When I go out to eat on the weekends, or when Im in an Uber, 70 percent of the time I am encountering a teacher that is working a second job to sustain or supplement their income, Watts said. And that saddens me a great deal. I really use it as an opportunity to learn and ask questions and to gain insight and perspective. I don't use it as an opportunity to share much. It really is just a continued learning opportunity for me.
Those teachers are the same ones standing in classrooms the next morning in front of our students. So, the cost of living adjustment provided by the Governorand we are supplementing that in our districtis just a small signal that we have to reform teacher compensation.
Watts came to Savannah after serving as the Chief of Schools for Houstons Independent School District. That district included more than 194,000 students across 274 schools. While there, she supervised principals, managed magnet schools and led innovation and strategy efforts for the district. It was a big undertaking, but it was more of a background role.
Now, she says her job has put her squarely in the spotlight.
The community has certainly noticed.
I was just in Kroger on Saturday with my ball cap on doing grocery shopping and this little boy comes up to me and he's like, are you our superintendent? Just getting used to some people recognizing me when I am out just being a mom or wife has been something that I've learned this year and something that I'm willing to accept. I'm on the clock 24/7, if I want to be or not, and that's just part of the job.

A core part of the Israel Innovation Authority's Israel National Quantum Initiative, the center is the first to tightly integrate multiple types of quantum computers with supercomputers using NVIDIA DGX Quantum
TEL AVIV, Israel, June 25, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Quantum Machines (QM), the leading provider of processor-based quantum controllers, announced the opening of the Israeli Quantum Computing Center (IQCC), a world-class research facility that will serve the quantum computing industry and academic community in Israel and around the world. The center was built with the financial backing and support of the Israel Innovation Authority and is located at Tel Aviv University.
The IQCC's grand opening took place yesterday, June 24th, as part of Tel Aviv University's AI and Cyber Week. The ceremony began with the ribbon-cutting, followed by speeches from Asaf Zamir, First Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv; Dror Bin, CEO of the Israel Innovation Authority; Prof. Yaron Oz and Prof. Itzik Ben Israel from Tel Aviv University; and Dr. Itamar Sivan, CEO of Quantum Machines. Industry experts, including Eyal Waldman, co-founder and former CEO of Mellanox, Ofir Zamir, Senior Director of AI Solution Architecture at NVIDIA, and Niv Efron, Senior Director of Engineering at Google, also shared their insights.
About the IQCC:
In the global race to develop practical quantum computing, access to cutting-edge facilities is crucial. "All of the world's most advanced quantum computing research facilities are closed or offer very limited access to those outside of their organization. You can't compete if you need to fly halfway around the world for limited access," said Dr. Itamar Sivan, CEO and co-founder of Quantum Machines. "When we thought about what would propel quantum computing forward, we realized that building the most advanced facility in terms of interoperability, modularity, and integration with high-performance computing (HPC) and the cloud was the way to go. Our open architecture approach will ensure that the facility can be continuously upgraded and scaled to stay at the cutting edge, making it an accelerator for the entire ecosystem in Israel and internationally."
The IQCC is a state-of-the-art quantum and HPC center that uniquely integrates the power of quantum and classical computing resources. It is the first in the world to house multiple co-located quantum computers of different qubit types, all utilizing the NVIDIA DGX Quantum system. This offers on-premises supercomputing resources and cloud accessibility, while being tightly integrated with Quantum Machines' processor-based OPX control system. The center also features the world's best-equipped testbed for developing new quantum computing technologies.

Why morning routines ranging from meditation to cold plunging are so popular – Vox.com
Posted: June 11, 2024 at 2:50 am
Of all the pillars of internet content, surely one of the strongest is the genre where people outline their morning routine in grave and sanctimonious detail. They exist in every medium, in every platform, among every internet subculture.
TikTok has its Get Ready With Mes, where influencers chat over their plethora of skin-nourishing unguents and artful makeup products. Beauty YouTube has the more glamorous cousin, Vogue Beauty Secrets, in which dewy-skinned celebrities walk us through the many things they do to their faces every morning.
Artist blogs swap tips about the best way to keep Morning Pages. Powerful women, titans of their respective industries, tell the Cut How I Get It Done. And on LinkedIn and YouTube, lifehackers share their morning tricks for maximizing productivity.
The productive morning is the one really taking off these days, beloved by the wellness world and the rise-and-grinders alike. The reigning king of the productivity ritual is Andrew Huberman, the controversial Stanford neuroscientist and podcaster whose routine is always being described in vlogs as scientifically perfect.
Hubermans morning routine straddles the thin line between sounding idyllic and torturous, depending on your proclivities. He awakens within an hour of sunrise every day, and then he goes outside for a 10-minute walk (30 minutes if its overcast) for optimum morning light exposure. He drinks electrolytes (for hydration) but abstains from food or caffeine while he performs 90 minutes of deep work (no emails, lots of in-depth research). Then he caffeinates, exercises vigorously, and cold plunges. (Cold showers will work too, he says). He doesnt eat until lunchtime.
At the beginning of the day, the strict capitalist clock demands forward momentum, but the soft animal of the human body wants nothing more than to doze comfortably in bed
This routine is internet catnip. Social media abounds with videos and essays about people following Hubermans routine for a day or a week or a month or a year and documenting the results. In one, the vlogger even tests his testosterone levels before and after his month-long experiment to prove that Hubermans protocols raised his levels. (Its worth noting at this point that not all of Hubermans ideas hold up to scrutiny.)
Hubermans ritual is intense, but the fascination it commands is not uncommon or new. Human beings have always been fascinated by the right way to spend a morning, and how everyone else is (allegedly) doing it. At the beginning of the day, the strict capitalist clock demands forward momentum, but the soft animal of the human body wants nothing more than to doze comfortably in bed. Perhaps because getting up is so difficult, it has become powerfully associated with virtue.
The association is telling. After all, how we spend our mornings determines how we intend to spend our days, and consequently our whole lives. Our aspiration for those sacred early daylight hours gives us a glimpse into what we actually value.
The idea that sleeping late is sinful has deep roots in Western culture. Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius spends much of The Meditations the notes he wrote to himself across his second-century reign, newly popular among tech bro enthusiasts chastising himself for his flaws. Those include having trouble getting out of bed in the morning. In the morning when you rise unwillingly, let this thought be present I am rising to the work of a human being, he instructs himself. While its true that lying in bed is more pleasant, after all, Do you exist then to take your pleasure, and not at all for action and exertion?
Jonathan Edwards, the influential early American theologian, agreed with Aurelius. I think Christ has recommended rising early in the morning, by his rising from the grave very early, he wrote in a diary entry in 1728; he himself got up at 4 am to devote 13 hour days to the study of Christ. When Benjamin Franklin plotted out his ideal schedule in his 1771 autobiography, he recommended waking up at 5 to pray, wash, have breakfast, and plan the day well.
You can see why so many of us have come to believe that mornings are more virtuous than afternoons or evenings and that its more important to spend the morning correctly than any other time of the day. The hours have a strict moral ranking kind of like the old saw that breakfast is the most important meal of the day (which, it turns out, was a myth propagated by cereal lobbyists and religious sects).
Thats more or less the logic behind the never-ending deluge of modern morning routine content, too: You have to optimize your morning, not your afternoon, because the morning is when its essential to (some would say ostentatiously) flex your discipline.
A morning routine is one of the most powerful ways of impacting your long-term success, a blog post for the AI productivity coach Rize explained in 2022. Morning hours are when you have a clean slate and are yet unimpacted by the days events. This means you can pick actions more consciously, deciding what serves you.
Many of us are busy, have a lot of responsibilities and obligations, and often feel strapped for time, admitted the wellness site VeryWell in 2023. Having a great morning routine can make all the difference in being productive, achieving goals, feeling organized, and doing all of this with confidence.
Or, as one Redditor put it, I want to have some productive routines I can follow to give me a reason to be up every morning.
There is some evidence for the idea that the way you spend your morning will influence the rest of your day. A 2024 Stanford Medical School study found that going to bed and rising early is associated with better mental health than going to bed late and rising late. Meanwhile, a 2016 study in Harvard Business Review (HBR) found that customer service representatives who started the day in a good mood usually stayed that way throughout the day, even when they had to deal with terrible customers. (Horrifyingly, the HBR takeaway is that managers should send their employees morale-boosting messages in the morning. Was there ever a surer way to kill a good mood than to hear that Steve in the C-suite wants you to have a terrific morning crushing those numbers?)
But do we really have to optimize the morning to maximize wellness so we can be better at business? Is being scrupulously healthy productivity machines what we actually want?
The routines of famous artists, which get repeated over and over again like little myths, tend not to be focused so much on cheerfulness as on cultivating intense emotional states. As such, they typically involve either monk-like asceticism or the ingestion of many, many stimulants. The idea with this sort of routine was to either discipline yourself into creativity or to evoke it by any chemical means necessary.
In his 2013 book Daily Rituals: How Artists Work, Mason Currey reports that author Patricia Highsmith, to make writing as pleasurable as possible, would begin her day writing in bed, supplied by cigarettes, coffee, vodka, donuts, and a saucer of plain sugar. Proust, he says, fueled his own work with opium, coffee, caffeine tablets, and then barbital sedatives to counteract the caffeine.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, Currey tells us that the Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope would awaken at 5:30 am and knock out three hours of work at his desk before he had to go to his day job at the post office. Beethoven woke at dawn, counted out precisely 60 beans from which to make himself a cup of coffee, and then sat at his desk to work until 2 or 3 in the afternoon, periodically reviving himself with walks outside.
The morning wellness routine is rhetorically positioned as both indulgence and capitalist virtue
Todays most famous morning routines have landed in between the Beethoven and Highsmith camps. They focus heavily on wellness and self-care: the elaborate ritual patting in of skin care, the daily workout that has become as universally mandatory as bathing.
Arianna Huffington, Oprah, Steve Jobs, and Jack Dorsey all do some combination of meditating and gratitude journaling. Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston drink lots of water. Everybody exercises. (No really everyone: Arianna Huffington, Oprah, Jack Dorsey, Tim Armstrong, Karen Blackett, Hans Vestberg, Vittorio Colao, Tim Cook, Barack Obama, Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian, Martha Stewart, Giorgio Armani.)
The morning wellness routine is rhetorically positioned as both indulgence and capitalist virtue. By taking time to tend to your physical body and mental health first thing in the morning, the theory is, you will be able to do more later. That, in fact, is why Andrew Huberman does all that stuff: to optimize his productivity. (Could it be that some of these people are not being 100 percent transparent about their perfectly plotted morning routines? The thought has crossed my mind.)
A lot of times, people say, How can I lift more, focus better, remember things better? Huberman explains in one video. And its like, Well, lets think about the foundation of that. His morning is set up to make him better at lifting, focusing, remembering which is to say, doing work.
Ten years ago, morning routines were also about the rise and grind, but differently so. CEOs would report getting out of bed at 4 am and getting right to their emails. I cant stand having any not done! one CEO told the Guardian of her email routine in 2013. At the time, there was no mention of the wonders of screen-free mornings, the meditation, and the journaling that have become fundamental to todays high-productivity routines.
Perhaps our current moment is what rise and grind looks like a few years after the combined traumas of the Trump era and the pandemic sent everyone in search of new ways to cope, without betraying the capitalist imperative to achieve ever more. White-collar workers spent the better part of two years not allowed to do much of anything besides work and obsess over their health. Now we obsess over our health in order to work more.
Our morning priorities show us what we value. And what we value right now, it seems, is trying to keep our harrowed minds and bodies together, and to still give as much as we can of ourselves to the work our world demands of us. What more can we manage in a single mornings work?
