Do Temple marks a turning point in Vietnams history

The Do Temple in Bac Ninh Province is a uniquely Vietnamese temple.

Situated around 20 kilometers from Hanoi, it is the best known and most visited temple in the country by far, which is not really surprising, as even a cursory study of its history shows.

The temple preserves most the traditions of Vietnam and also keeps almost everything people need to know about the Ly Dynasty (1009 1225), the first Vietnamese ruling family able to hold onto power for more than several decades, allowing them to secure and expand the territory.

Do means the capital city. It has as its deities eight kings of the Ly dynasty. The temples other names are Thai Mieu, Co Phap Dien and Ly Bat De.

It is still not explained why or how the ninth and last ruler of the dynasty, Ly Chieu Hoang, the only female one, has been left out.

Ly Chieu Hoang was enthroned when she was just eight and handed over the reins to her husband Tran Canh after two years, effectively ending the Ly Dynasty.

It has also been said that feudalism valued men more than women and that they were not to be worshiped equally.

The temple was built in 1010 by Ly Thai To, the founder of the dynasty, and restored by his son Ly Thai Tong in 1030.

Public invited to La Porte's 'Fitness Fridays'

Posted: at 6:30 am

LA PORTE - Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital, the City of La Porte and the La Porte County Family YMCA have partnered to provide a newly created weekly non-competitive group for interested walkers and runners or just those interested in general fitness.

All members of the public are invited to attend Fitness Fridays, offered at 4 p.m. every Friday from March 30 - Sept. 28 (weather permitting) at the Y, 901 Michigan Ave. in La Porte. Participants are asked to meet at the Michigan Avenue entrance.

Participants may walk or run along a scenic 5K route that starts in downtown La Porte at the intersection of Maple and Michigan avenues, ventures by the historic homes and down the tree-lined streets of Michigan Avenue, passes through the Beechwood Golf Course and returns back to the Y.

Fitness Fridays came to fruition as an initiative to promote fitness and active lifestyles, program organizers said. Organizers brainstormed innovative ideas for months before gaining unanimous support to provide the community with healthy programs like Fitness Fridays.

Im thrilled with the partnership and cross-participation between all three entities, Mayor Blair Milo said. We all pro-actively worked together to provide La Porteans a casual, social option of exercise through the beautiful scenery of La Porte. We encourage everyone to come out each Friday, bring the whole family and make a change to improve your quality of life.

The initial March 30 Fitness Friday will kick off with sign ups and other activities. Additional events and activities will be planned throughout the summer as well. In addition, IU Health La Porte Hospital will provide a free T-shirt to participants who attend more than ten Fitness Fridays.

The flat route was designed to be all-inclusive - for beginners, amateurs or seasoned runners of all ages and fitness levels.

This is really for everybody, said Cindy Berchem, executive director of the Y. We want to raise awareness for our community to get up, get involved and start moving. Its always a lot easier to be active when you have a friend, a spouse or other family member to bring along.

For more information, call the Y at (219) 325-9622.

Changes to Old Age Security-BMO Retirement Institute Offers Tips on How Canadians Can Prepare for Retirement

Posted: at 6:30 am

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire -03/30/12)- A number of Canadians aged 54 and under will be affected by changes to Old Age Security (OAS) announced in the Federal Budget. In 10 years the age for OAS eligibility will rise from 65 to 67.

OAS benefits are currently paid to Canadians aged 65 and over; individuals can receive up to a maximum of nearly $6,500 per year based on meeting residency requirements.

According to a report by Harris Decima commissioned by the BMO Retirement Institute, 32 per cent of Canadians aged 25-54 will rely on OAS, the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) and the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) as their primary source of retirement income.

Tina Di Vito, Head of the BMO Retirement Institute, advises Canadians to adopt a long-term approach to saving for retirement and understand the right tax strategies to maximize old age security benefits. These strategies, despite the changes announced in the Federal Budget, enable income to be earned from the most advantageous sources.

BMO offers tips on how Canadians can prepare for retirement:

This study was conducted by Harris/Decima using their proprietary online panel. A total of 1,008 Canadians ages 25 to 64 were surveyed between November 10th and 24th, 2011.
